The Japanese Musician
24" x 30" x 1.5"
Oil on canvas
Usually if I start to see an image while I am creating an abstract, I'm in trouble as it can really jam me up. In this case though, a fleeting impression of a woman in traditional Japanese clothing came and then stayed and was uncharacteristically helpful as I moved along, at times oblivious to her presence, while I responded to color, form and texture, at other times informing where to place a stroke.
This painting process is somewhat mysterious though enticing with a lovely surprise at the end when the artist dreamer in me awakes and sees consciously what is there. A little "conscious dreaming" in this case didn't interfere with the process.
