Oil on canvas

P Is For Possibility

Painted in oils, including gold oil, on deep edge gallery-wrapped cotton canvas. It will be removed from the stretchers to ship rolled.

The letter emerged after working with the colors, forms and textures, which is typical of my process. I found it exciting to realize I was remembering how I felt when I came across the Book Of Kells in 1980. I studied it closely. I haven't seen it in many years, having donated my first edition printing of the book to my local library. but it's impression remains. I love its art, line, color, spirit, and the whimsy amongst the serious gospel illustrations. I thought of the monk toiling away in isolation, creating the impossible intertwined forms with indelible colors, yet imbedding so much humor if you look closely, for example, at the creatures chasing birds, leaving eggs behind them in the chase, the winged cows amongst the gargoyles. The gold line amongst the teal on the beige of the vellum. I don't need to see it to remember its impact. I'm feeling as if I've come full circle, and am interested in doing more leading letter paintings.
